Electricity Rebate

This program will provide a rebate equivalent to the provincial portion of the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) (10%) on electricity consumption for residential use charged by the four electricity providers in New Brunswick:

• NB Power
• Edmundston Energy
• Saint John Energy
• Perth Andover Electric Light Commission

The rebate will appear on your monthly power bill, and you will receive the savings automatically – no application is needed. The rebate is available to residential electricity customers (domestic dwelling) who pay HST on their residential electricity bills.  The rebate applies to the kilowatt hours of electricity consumption, not service charges or rental fees.

Just look for “GNB 10% Rebate” on your bill reflecting January electricity usage.

This affordability measure is being put in place now to provide much-needed relief to many New Brunswickers who are struggling with the rising cost of living.

Residential electricity customers (domestic dwellings) who pay HST are eligible for the rebate.

If you are not a residential electricity customer of one of the electrical utilities, you will not be eligible for the rebate (e.g. electricity is included in your rent).   

There are approximately 400,000 residential electricity customers in New Brunswick, and electricity consumption accounts for about 87 per cent of home energy consumption in the province.

The rebate is available for electricity usage (consumption) only, and not for service charges or rental fees.

As a point-of-sale rebate, eligible residential electricity customers will see the rebate on their monthly bills.  Just look for “GNB 10% Rebate” on your bill, beginning with your January electricity usage.

For people on equalized billing the rebate will apply to the actual charges for the billing cycle. It will be up to customers to adjust their equalized billing payment accordingly.

The rebate is effective January 1, 2025, meaning it will apply to electricity used on, or after, January 1.

The average customer can expect to save approximately $216 annually.

The government investment in this program is about $32 million for the current fiscal year, and a permanent annual investment of approximately $92.6 million beginning in 2025-2026.
